Meet the Large Fringed Orchid!
Published at : October 06, 2021
Ohio Field Botanist, Andrew Lane Gibson @the_buckeye_botanist , introduces us to Platanthera conspicua, the Large White Fringed Orchid!
We have two species of white flowering Platanthera, but this is the only “fringed” species. Our other white species, Snowy Orchid, Platanthera nivea, lacks the fringe on its labellum and is much smaller in size.
This species is found in pine savannas, seepages, and longleaf pine sandhill-pocosin ecotones in the Florida panhandle and into the peninsula. It blooms from July into September.
